MEDIA REPORT
The National - Tuesday 23rd June, 2009 (Regional News)
The Kokopo
Beach Bungalows in East New Britain province was filled to the brim last
Thursday night as business houses flocked in to witness the official launching
of Digicel’s Blackberry in Kokopo.
Area manager New Guinea Islands region Lorna
Roge said Digicel was pleased to offer another first to the New Guinea Islands
market.
The company behind Blackberry, Research in Motion, was founded in
Canada in 1984.
“For most of us, me included, Blackberry is a relatively new revelation,”
she said.
Ms Roge said while the devices had been around since 1999, they
really did not start gaining any traction until the early 21st century.
She
said Research in Motion now boasted 14 million subscribers worldwide and the
impact was significant for businesses and consumers.
She said it had changed
the face of the telecommunication industry.
The Digicel USB modem Dongle was also launched. It is a wireless device that is attached to a computer, or
laptop, to give access to the internet.
Two of Digicel’s Blackberry account
managers were also in Kokopo to assist people with their queries.
Three people
won lucky door prizes comprising Blackberry curves. They were Nancy Tibu,
Jonathan Manoa and Jason Seeto. Digicel officers handed out brochures and
explained to curious people the uses of Blackberry.
