Digicel Goes Live With Interconnect

June 26th 2008 - Digicel turns on nationwide interconnection offering all Papua New Guineans the freedom of choice

Thursday, June 26, 2008, Port Moresby: Digicel, the fastest growing mobile operator in the Pacific, will go live with interconnect at midnight tonight, Thursday June 26, as agreed with Telikom last week Thursday.

Interconnection will allow mobile users to call and SMS between Digicel’s state of the art network and B Mobile phones as well as allow Digicel users to make calls to Telikom fixed lines without any technical barriers.

Digicel Pacific COO, Fiona McGloin, said that Digicel has been ready for interconnection since last year May and is very excited about finally launching full nationwide interconnection.

“It is paramount that the long awaited interconnection between ourselves and Telikom takes place tonight. Digicel, Telikom and ICCC have been working hard to make this happen. Interconnection is a major milestone for us all and especially for the people of Papua New Guinea allowing them to contact friends, family and loved ones no matter what network they are using. Let’s celebrate this special occasion together.”

Under the new interconnection regime, rates for calls from Digicel to B Mobile are charged at K1.70 (Peak, GST inclusive) and K1.40 (Off Peak, GST inclusive). Rates for calls from Digicel to a Telikom fixed line are charged at K1.50 (Peak, GST inclusive) and K1.00 (Off Peak, GST inclusive). Sending SMS from Digicel to B Mobile is charged at K0.35t (GST inclusive) per SMS. Digicel to Digicel mobile calling rates remain unchanged.
