DIGICEL LAUNCHED IN PORGERA
July 12th 2010 - Extending mobile coverage to unreached areasDigicel, PNG’s Bigger, Better Network further extended its service into the small mining town of Porgera two weeks ago.
People living around Porgera Gap and the Porgera Joint Venture Township are now able to make and receive calls, send SMS and enjoy other mobile technological beauties of the 21st century like the internet; via their newly purchased mobile phones.
Community leaders, business houses and members of the PNG Constabulary currently stationed there to assist Operation Ilpili were all happy to call their families back home during the launch.
People came as far as Porgera Gap and nearby villages like Boom gate, Paiam Station, Paiam Market, Porgera Police Barracks, the Porgera Mining Township and, Porgera Station to witness the official launching that marked the dawn of another milestone of development within the Enga Province.
On June 22, the Digicel team again travelled the Highlands Highway to Kombiam Station, a few kilometers out of Wabag town to officiate another launch. The Kombiam residents were grateful about the long-awaited mobile service and came in numbers to purchase Digicel’s latest and affordable handsets. The Deputy Headmaster of the Kombiam Secondary School in Wabag was grateful to receive complementary phones from Digicel and he said,
‘It was very difficult to call our offices but with the Launch of the tower located within the station, we can receive and make calls out of the school and effectively communicate with the Education Department back in Wabag and in other parts of PNG.
Digicel PNG CEO, John Mangos commented:
“Digicel is committed to bring affordable and reliable communications to the most remote areas in PNG. We aim to bring communications into areas that have never had any form of telecommunication coverage before. In addition, we plan on launching more new sites around the country soon.”
Digicel is currently erecting towers and extending its mobile services to the remote areas of PNG. During last few weeks, it had launched services, at the PNG-Indonesian border at Wutung, in the Milne Bay Islands, Arawa in Bougainville and now Porgera in the Enga Province.
