Lihir Welcomes Digicel

June 25th 2008 - Digicel continues its rapid mobile network expansion to include the Island of Lihir

Wednesday June 25, 2008 - Port Moresby: Digicel, the fastest-growing mobile operator in the Pacific, continued its rapid expansion in Papua New Guinea with the launch today of the Bigger, Better Network in Lihir, New Ireland province.

Digicel Pacific Chief Operating Officer, Fiona McGloin, said that the launch in Lihir will provide the population of more than 17,000 people with mobile communications in areas that have never had access to mobile communications before.

“Connecting the island of Lihir with the rest of Papua New Guinea and the world is yet another milestone in Digicel’s continued commitment to give the people of this country access to the best GSM mobile technology available at the most affordable rates,” Fiona continued.

Lihir Island is the most recent addition to Digicel’s rapid roll out of their state-of-the-art mobile network reaching a total of 13 provinces. Digicel is committed to rolling out affordable, high quality and innovative mobile services nationwide. Since entering the PNG mobile market in July, 2007, mobile call prices have decreased by up to 60%. Digicel has invested in excess of K450 million in PNG and plans to invest a further K1 billion over the next three years.
