Digicel announces major sponsorship for top volleyball team
The sponsorship will cover the cost of airfares, uniforms, equipment (balls, nets, whistles), in-house referee & coaching courses as well as trophies and awards for the team.
Digicel VAVA president Turaho Morea when thanking Digicel for the sponsorship said: “This will be the biggest sponsorship from a corporate organization that VAVA has ever received, since being established more than 15 years ago.”
“We’re very pleased that Digicel has recognized the achievements of a village-based sporting organization and come to support us in such a big way,” Mr. Morea said.
Recently, the team won gold at the Arafura Games in Australia and currently hold the national championship titles.
When presenting the sponsorship to the Digicel VAVA team Digicel Head of Commercial Mark Procter said “Digicel sees grassroots sports such as volleyball as a great way to get involved with the people of PNG. Volleyball is a sport that can be played almost anywhere - in the villages, around town or on the beach. The VAVA team have already proved they can match it with the best and we’re confident that our involvement will help them jump to even greater heights.”
Mr. Morea said the team has traveled the length and breadth of PNG to retain their title which has come with gigantic financial commitments.
“Winning a championship is an end result which everyone sees but what goes on behind the scenes to achieve such results is painstaking and financially challenging on players, officials and administrators of the association,” he concluded.
Digicel
VAVA will participate in the National Championships from September 17-20 and in
local competitions until the end of 2009.
