DIGICEL GO FOR GOLD VAULT TOTALS TO K51, 000
September 8th 2011 - DIGICEL GO FOR GOLD VAULT TOTALS TO K51, 000As the day drew to an end, Team PNG athletes continue to produce Gold with hurdling king Mowen Boino claiming Gold in the 400m hurdles and further proclaimed his status as the number one in his sport in the Pacific. Salome Dell also added a Gold to her tally when she took out the highest honor in the women’s 1500m event while Betty Burua won gold in the 400m hurdles for the women’s forcing team mate Sharon Kwarula into second place. The athletes fantastic efforts have now seen the Digicel Go for Gold Vault increase to a massive K51,000.
“PNG’s fastest man” Nelson Stone dashed away in the 400m finals on Wednesday to notch up his first Gold and brought the total number of Team PNG Golds to 30.
Team PNG has also moved up a notch on the medal tally and are now sitting comfortably on third place after relegating Fiji into fourth placing. With one day remaining before closure of the 14th Pacific Games, there is likelihood Team PNG would knock Tahiti out from second spot on the medal tally.
To date 15 individual athletes have won gold for PNG, while PNG’s Cricket heroes are the only team to take the top step on the podium, bringing the overall reward payments from Team PNG Major sponsor Digicel to K51,000. Team PNG has 33 Gold medals with one more expected before the close of the games on Saturday.
The women’s soccer team will defend their crown tomorrow when they take on hosts New Caledonia while tennis sisters Abigail and Marcia Tere-Apisah battle it out in the women’s doubles final
The Digicel Go for Gold incentive program developed by Team PNG’s Major sponsor will see each Gold Medal winning athlete receive a payment of K1500 per individual Gold, with Teams that achieve the highest honour sharing a K3000 payment.
