DIGICEL SPONSORS POPONDETTA URBAN RUGBY LEAGUE
May 19th 2010 - DIGICEL SPONSORS POPONDETTA URBAN RUGBY LEAGUEDigicel PNG’s Bigger Better Network has put in a hand to support the Urban Rugby League in Popondetta.
Rugby in Popondetta had been inactive for 23 years until 2008 when it officially launched again. This year’s season has seen the game in running since April and there are eight teams competing; most of which are unemployed youths.
This year, Digicel went on board to show its support as the competition was in need of prizes for the participating teams and players. It was also the first company to provide assistance to the competition. This initiative was highly appreciated by rugby league officials, players and fans within Popondetta town.
The official hand over of the sponsorship package was done by Digicel Popondetta’s Area Manager James Wila to the Popondetta Rugby League Chairman Mathew Kano, players and members of the community during a match of the proper season game.
In response to the sponsorship, President of the Popondetta Urban Rugby League applauded Digicel for the timely support and the initiative to sponsor the competition.
He comments:
“We are grateful for the support and assistance that Digicel has provided. Digicel has been the only company that has come on board with the much needed help which had greatly boosted our youths’ morale to play rugby. With the sponsored prizes that Digicel had given, the youths have a goal to play towards.”
“In addition, we have also received feedbacks from the Popondetta Police and local church pastors that there has been a decrease in domestic disturbance within the town as more and more youths are now committed to training and playing rugby, he added”.
Digicel PNG CEO comments:
“Digicel is proud to be part of the lead that the Popondetta Urban Rugby League has initiated; to keep youths of the streets. We not only focus on income generation but also in giving back to the community. This is our way of support through initiatives including sports.
Digicel sponsors the man-of- the-match awards with Samsung flip open phones; giving out three phones per game for a total of four weeks now. The Popondetta Rugby League competition is in proper season and will be in its sixth round by this Sunday.
