DIGICEL SUPPORTS SPARROWS NETBALL TEAM WITH K6, 000
The Sparrows Netball team showed its appreciation and acknowledgment for Digicel PNG’s financial support by officially changing their name to Digicel Sparrows.
This decision came about after the team received a much needed financial assistance from PNG’s Bigger, Better mobile company, Digicel.
Digicel Sparrows will now have more reason to be on top of their games thanks to a sponsorship cheque of K6, 000 that Digicel’s Head of Sales Micheal Townsley presented to officials and members of the team in Port Moresby.
Officials of the netball club applauded Digicel for exposing itself as a corporate citizen by supporting women of all ages through community sports.
Mr. Townsley said: “Digicel is proud to contribute to national development and the advocacy on gender equality and empowerment of women in PNG through community sports. We are pleased to be part of Team Sparrow’s vision statement towards meeting their vision- "To have and promote the knowledge of the code of netball at all levels of society”.
Speaking on behalf of the club, team representative, Ms Julianne Leka Maliaki thanked Digicel for its generous sponsorship. She commented:
“Team Sparrows is extremely grateful of Digicel’s sponsorship which has come a long way to assist the team. This timely assistance enabled us to roll-out the team’s programmes for this year, which could not have otherwise been possible. We are currently doing well in the competition and hope to do Digicel proud”.
“We are confident that the partnership will bring much deserved rewards to the club just as it will for netball in Papua New Guinea. This assistance will also go a long way to develop netball at the junior ranks. We are pleased to be associated with PNG’s leading mobile company; for showing a dynamic approach to corporate responsibility.” she added.
The Sparrows Netball Club comprises of PNG’s latest talent in netball and is recognized as a partner and friend in the community.
It’s recognition of the club in terms of this sponsorship will also provide more young girls the opportunity to play netball and thus fulfill one of its other objectives which aims to “promote and encourage junior development by enhancing its players through participation in the local competition and at the national level through annual champions”.
Digicel is the proud sponsor of sport and community initiatives across the Pacific including the Digicel Fiji 7s, Manu Samoa Rugby, the Digicel Cup club rugby tournaments in Fiji and Tonga, Beach Volleyball and Cricket in Vanuatu and the PNG Volleyball Federation.
